Can I Have Terrific Sandwiches In My Lunch Box?
After a lifetime of making simple but basic sandwiches you may dream of having some of those tasty ones you see at sandwich bars. The problem is with the cost. The sandwiches to buy cost a fair bit more than your boring ones. So how can you put a new twist on your old favorite sandwiches? Here are a few great new sandwich ideas that might help you fill that lunch box with tasty new versions that you’ll enjoy making and your family will love.
The very first ingredient of a great sandwich is, of course, the bread and you should pay attention to this. Using that spongy white bread that produces a soggy-by-lunchtime sandwich will never make a great sandwich. A creative sandwich idea will always start with a good quality bread. You could try a hefty sub roll, a pocket bread or whole-grain breads. Your much loved ham sandwich will be made all the better on a sub roll and if you stuff it with some thinly sliced red onions and fresh tomatoes, lettuce and slices of smoked cheddar you have suddenly made something special.
Pocket bread is a great favorite with my kids so I fill that pocket with some tuna or a little chicken salad and add a few sliced olives and tomatoes. Whole grain breads are wonderful for making sandwich that work well with alfalfa sprouts and avocados, along with some farmer’s cheese and a couple of slices of roast beef.
To develop perfect sandwich ideas will require you have a selection of sandwich meats. If you keep an eye on the sales and stock up on deli meats when they do special offers you can try some different ideas. If you portion out a suitable amount of sandwich meat and freeze the individual portions in waxed paper then remove all the air from a zip sealed bag and freeze until needed. You can take the frozen meat and place it in the sandwich in the morning. By lunch time, it’s perfect.
Some great sandwich ideas that are always appreciated include freshly sliced, imaginative veggies. Cucumbers, hot peppers, mushrooms, sprouts and avocados are just a few examples. A great sandwich needs the freshest vegetables that you can find.
The dressings is the icing on the sandwich ideas cake. So, instead of the usual ho-hum mayo and mustard, try a bit of ranch dressing or another of your favorite salad dressings. Horseradish and roast beef can make a terrific eye-opening sandwich combination and if you like pesto then spread the inside of a pocket bread with this delightful concoction, then load it up with tomatoes, garlic and onions for a vegetarian gourmet treat. You can always add some fresh tarragon to a shrimp salad and lay on leaves of hearts of romaine and Spanish onions for a taste treat.
Cheese will always add to both nutrition and taste so add different cheeses to your sandwich repertoire as you find them on sale. Cheeses generally suffer if they are frozen so you should try to keep a fresh stock. The secret of great sandwiches lies in your imagination and using the contents your family loves. Spend a little time thinking about it and give your family, and yourself, some fresh new tastes and combinations for your sandwiches.
